 Progresive Malaysia - by @lbert
  Posted:23/04/2008 - 09:33 - in category: general
I am appalled by all the noise about the appointment of Kah Choon in 2 non politicl posts in Penang.
Pak tak tahu continues to be blurr. The guy was appointed on capacity, not politics.
Does does country want to progress or keep on playing kampung politics, its really sickening!

 13-14 April Songkran ! - by @lbert
  Posted:14/04/2008 - 09:32 - in category: travel abroad
You can celebrate Songkran (Buddhist new year or water festival) in Penang, but if you want to have the real taste of it, go to Hadyai.
Go on the evening of the 12th, than preparations are in full swing. Be prepared to be soaking wet on the 13th and 14th morning all the time.
I can tell you its a great fest, even the policemen in Hadyai were soaking in their shoes.....
Hadyai city council goes to great length to make it a great occasion.
They have a parade where the deities from the temple are carried around and washed with water by the worshipers.
After the water festivities, you can go shopping on the 14th and return home 'blessed'!
This year i was not able to go because of my next chemo round. But next year i'll be there again!

Where did all the docters go... - by @lbert
  Posted:13/04/2008 - 11:34 - in category: general
From The Star this morning:
PUTRAJAYA: More and more medical students sent abroad to study on government scholarships, many costing more than a million ringgit each, are breaking their 10-year bond by refusing to return and serve in public hospitals.
This is a sore point with us. In 2006, 21 medical students in Britain did not return. Last year, the number was 63. For those studying in Ireland, three students did not come back in 2006 while last year, 27 did not return, said Human Capital Development division director Datin Madinah Mohamad.
She said these students cost the Government up to RM1.1mil each in funding for the five-year course.

This is scandalous, the rakyat pays millions for their studies, and they simply refuse to pay back and or do some community service in government hospital.

But the the excuse from the government is:
Legal action was slow and guarantors would be taken to court only as the last resort, she said.

So the solution is simple.... give them 2 chances to pay back, no result, fine them at least 50% of the loan amount, and go after the quarantor.
On top of that black list them, so they cannot have their passports renewed overseas, which makes them illegals in their host country!
See whether the money comes back yes or no.
I bet 99% will be received.
But action needs to be taken, the government cannot just send a few letters only.
This is tax payers money giving a happy few a fat salary after their graduation, so grab them.

According to the Star:
Since 2003, 145 students from Britain and 85 from Ireland have not come back. However, only three from Russia, two from Jordan and one from Japan failed to return.

That is how many millions that can be used for other students! Go figure......

Expect the worst - by @lbert
  Posted:10/04/2008 - 08:53 - in category: environment
From NST:
Brace for the worst-ever haze this year. That's the dire warning from experts who are blaming the weakening La Nina.

The news gets worse as Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore don't have detailed plans on how to cope with the haze.

If weather patterns hold, the number of hot spots in Indonesia is expected to shoot up and cause choking haze, the kind which blanketed the region for months in 2006.

The looming environmental and health threat was the "hot" topic at the fourth meeting of the Sub-Regional Ministerial Steering Committee on Transboundary Haze Pollution yesterday.

Hosted by the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry, the meeting was attended by environment ministers and officials from Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and Brunei.
"We are prepared for the worst," said Indonesian Environment Minister Rachmat Witoelar after the meeting.

So after so many years it proves that Indonesia is simply UNWILLING to do anything about the haze problem that chokes us every year. They rather accept the 'duit kopi' from the companies who do all the 'condoned' burning

 Leaping forward. - by @lbert
  Posted:09/04/2008 - 08:41 - in category: general
Malaysia made a tremendous step forward in controlling trafic behaviour of drivers.
THEY REDUCED TRAFIC FINES!!
In the current trafic situation with people driving like monkeys, this is totally outrageous, which person got this stupid idea?
The fines should be doubled or tripled, than it hurts and people will think twice. Now they give a shit....

Makluman:Kadar kompaun baru saman trafik adalah untuk semua saman

 Is it a toy? - by @lbert
  Posted:08/04/2008 - 11:18 - in category: internet / computers
Is it a toy? I do not think so it is the lightest Laptop available yet.The ASUS EEE pc.
- Weight including battery under 1 kg!
- A full sized keyboard and only 225 x 165 x 21~35.
- Comes with 500Mb memory and a 4 GB flash disk as HD.
- Communication - 10/100 Mbps Ethernet
- WLAN WiFi 802.11b/g
- Web-Cam - 0.3 Mega Pixel Video camera
- Intel Celeron M 900 MHz ULV, L2 cache 256 MB, FSB 400 MHz
- Intel NG82910GMLE/NH82801FBM.
- Lifespan battery 3 hours.

I installed XP Home on it instead of Linux. The XP home can have its footprint reduced to around 8-900 mB after some fiddling.
It has 7" wide-screen, 800 x 480 display. Good enough for proper working.
Comes with 3 USB ports, monitor connection and network connection. Plus headphone/mike input
So even can use VOIP for making phone calls.
I use a 4 GB sticky to have some extra files and programs on.

This is exactly what i wanted for traveling, no excessive weight, can quickly download email at McD or where ever, and via Word or Excel i can enter what i require on the spot. Can almost fit in a big pocket.
For a going price of RM 1299.00 i think it is a steal for someone like me, needing some kind of laptop but not willing to carry weight.

Are they nuts? - by @lbert
  Posted:06/04/2008 - 07:29 - in category: travel Malaysia
The move to terminate tourism memorandums of understanding and the Tourism Action Councils in opposition-led states, is as if the Federal Government did not want to promote tourism in states previously under the Barisan Nasional.

Opposition state governments have been informed that the Malaysian Tourism Board office and the state Development Office here, which were funded and manned by the Federal Government, have been closed.
So no tourist promotion anymore for opposition states!
Whats left? Sabah, Serawak.....
Selangor also left out? So no more promotions on Sepang as well....
This country rakes in billions of Ringgit a year from tourism, is this a reason to seek revenge on opposition states?
Does this government have brains? I doubt.
And besides that all funding comes from tax payers money, are there no taxpayers in opposition led states?

Geert Wilders cartoon - by @lbert
  Posted:01/04/2008 - 08:43 - in category: foreign
Kurt Westergaard (72) , the Danish cartoonist who with his Muhammad cartoon in the Jyllands-Posten in 2005 turned the muslim world upside down, made this catoon of Wilders.
In an interview he said:
In the anti koranfilm of Geert Wilders the cartoon showed up again. I did not like it because he says it is theft and breached the copyright. "I do not agree with many of Wilders viewpoints, but he has the right to publish them." In Denmark a politician would never disallow it. Everything should be allowed , I stick to that Westgaard said. We will have to go through this period.
Tension between the religious moslims and Westerse democraty is not something that will be solved tomorrow. It will take years to solve but democraty will win in the end.

The above is a translation of an interview with Westgaard with the Belgian P-magazine

UPDATE: I just learned that Fitna is back on LiveLeak. So if you want to make your own judgement go here. Expect download to be very slow...

Mydin stores protest. - by @lbert
  Posted:01/04/2008 - 08:17 - in category: consumer affairs
According to the Star:
All Mydin stores nationwide have placed red labels on products from the Netherlands as a sign of protest over the release of the controversial anti-Islam film Fitna.
Mydin Mohamed Holdings Bhd managing director Datuk Ameer Ali Mydin said they have put up notices in their two hypermarkets and 24 emporiums nationwide as a step to urge shoppers not to purchase the products.

My question has Mr Ameer seen the movie or is it another hypocrite protesting because of protestesting?
The whole movie nowhere insults Islam, it only shows fanatics, who do not represent the majority of Islam.
All further things in the movie are quotes from the Sunnah and Surah, and are true, noone can deny that. Maybe they are taken out of context.
Well i do not think any Dutch company will have a headache because of Mr Ameer......
I find his action just as stupid as placing the Fitna movie on the internet. (Is it still available?)
Shahrir commended Mydin and Ameer for speaking up and placing the labels to discourage people from purchasing products from the Netherlands.

Same question has Sharir Abdul Samad seen the movie or is he too another hypocrite....
All the red labels anyway will show how many products come from the Netherlands, so free advertisement?

The Muslim Consumer Organization Malaysia also jumped the bandwagon (of course), but this organization is a bunch of nut cases. They see spookes everywhere, see what i wrote on
